Low Blood Pressure
Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) has reported that patients undergoing dialysis treatment with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte acid concentrates can experience low blood pressure, which can lead to an increased risk for sudden cardiac death and stroke.
In an internal 2001 memo Fresenius Medical Care, who manufactures both Granuflo and Naturalyte, warns that the products contain sodium diacetate, which can cause dialysis patients to experience a bicarbonate overdose during treatment. Metabolic alkalosis, a pH imbalance in the bloodstream, is caused by high bicarbonate blood levels and can lead to severe adverse reactions such as low blood pressure, heart attack and sudden death.
Patients filing lawsuits against Fresenius allege that the manufacturer failed to warn thousands of physicians working in dialysis clinics not owned by Fresenius Medical Care about the link between GranuFlo and NaturaLyte acid concentrates and low blood pressure. The internal Fresenius memo was not made public until an FDA inquiry in 2012.
