Low Blood Pressure
Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) has reported that patients undergoing dialysis treatment with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte acid concentrates may face side effects such as low blood pressure, which could lead to an increased risk for cardiac arrest and stroke.
In an internal memo issued only to dialysis centers owned by Fresenius Medical Care, the manufactures warn that GranuFlo and NaturaLyte contain sodium diacetate, which can cause dialysis patients with elevated pre-dialysis bicarbonate levels to experience a bicarbonate overdose during treatment. Metabolic alkalosis, a pH imbalance in the bloodstream, is caused by high bicarbonate blood levels and can lead to severe complications such as low blood pressure, heart attack and sudden death.
Patients filing lawsuits against Fresenius Medical Care allege that the manufacturer failed to warn thousands of physicians working in dialysis clinics not owned by Fresenius about the link between GranuFlo and NaturaLyte acid concentrates and low blood pressure.
